Chiropractic & Pregnancy
Chiropractic care is an integral part in the prenatal and postpartum stages of pregnancy. Low back, pelvic and hip pain during pregnancy can be due to stress put on your musculoskeletal system by mechanical, hormonal and circulatory changes. Mechanical changes occur as woman experience a shift in their centre of gravity leading to changes in posture. This change in posture, shifting forward, may cause pain and discomfort specifically in the lower back. Additionally, during pregnancy the body secretes a hormone called relaxin to help the pelvic region relax and blood volume can increase by 50% which can lead to inflammation and water retention. Both can contribute to low back pain and joint discomfort. Musculoskeletal pain is quite common during pregnancy and chiropractic care has been shown to help alleviate pain and discomfort by maintaining alignment of the spine and pelvis. Postpartum care can help to restore proper biomechanics and improve posture for holding baby and breast-feeding. Treatment involves safe and gentle adjustments, soft tissue work, exercises and stretches.
